My Fox News Day

My Fox & Friends Day

By: Ryleigh Jo Carson (7th grade Valley)

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve more than likely heard about the whole “Tofurkey” ordeal.  If you haven’t heard, let me catch you up.  People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wanted Turkey to change its name to Tofurkey for Thanksgiving Day to help promote their TOFU substitute for a BUTTERBALL! Why? Because they thought we were named Turkey for the turkeys grown for food instead of the beautiful wild turkeys.  The publicity quickly became out of control and spread across Texas and then the US. So now you are caught up!

My dad, Pat Carson and the mayor of Turkey, and I, Ryleigh Jo , went down to the Fox News station in Lubbock on Saturday, November 19 so he could be interviewed on Fox & Friends by Peter King (in New York) to sort this thing out.

When we got there, a man- a quite grumpy one- was waiting for us at the door to type in the security pass codes so we could get inside. And once we were in – WOW! The first room we walked into was a fantastic red and blue office-type section with Fox News written everywhere. I stayed and took pictures, but not my dad! Immediately the grumpy man took him away, while talking on the phone with Bluetooth, pointed where my dad needed to sit, and started clipping things on him. I took many, many, pictures and asked my dad what all the clips did. There were four clips. One was a mike, one was a speaker in his ear, one controlled the mike, and the last was for the frequency.

We sat there for around 20 minutes; me taking still more pictures. When the grumpy camera guy said it was time, I stood behind him and watched. I couldn’t see or hear Peter King, but my dad could hear him. I heard my dad clarify that we were not taking PETA up on this offer, and we were named for the Rio Grande Turkeys that run wild around Turkey.  He said that a more accurate slogan would be ‘Save the turkeys, Eat more beef!’  He also said how strongly agricultural our community was, and how PETA wasn’t.  2 minutes and 56 seconds later the interview was over. The grumpy man immediately brightened up, and gave us a tour. I was AMAZED at all the technology in the back. There were two rooms, one with shelf upon shelf of blinking, beeping lights and boxes. The other looked almost like a recording studio- it was for the sound of the interviews. We were very impressed with it all.

And that was my day at the Fox News station in Lubbock.
